Common Leader: We are falling behind and not on target to hit out goals this quarter. We need to get with the team and figure out what is wrong with them and why they aren't performing.

Effective Leader: We are falling behind and not on target to hit our goals this quarter. I need to get with the team and find out if I have provided them the tools they need in order for them to be successful. I need to make sure they all know what the goal is and how important their contribution is.

Don't be a common leader.

When a team is struggling to perform, as leaders we need to look in the mirror. It's time for a little self-reflection.

Ask yourself:

  • Are the goals clear?

  • Have I provided the team members with the tools they need to succeed?

  • Have I created a culture where the employees can thrive?

Ask your employees:

  • Are there any obstacles or challenges you're facing?

  • Do you feel that the goals and expectations are clear and achievable?

  • Do you have all the tools and resources you need to do your job effectively?

  • Is there any additional training or support that would help you perform better?

  • Are there any processes or systems that you find particularly challenging or inefficient?

  • Do you feel motivated and engaged in your work? If not, what could improve this?

  • How can I support you better in achieving your goals?

  • Seeking the answers to these questions will help you identify and remove obstacles, making you an effective leader driving your team and organization to success!

Start the conversation. Be open and solicit feedback. And watch your team work better as a result!
